Some people could think that Golf is the greatest game in the world, but some other could say that it’s just an opinion. Today at Slazenger Heritage, one of the oldest sporting clothing brand, we want to teach you some fun facts about golf.

Some of you may already know them or you may not, the truth is that many of them are quite curious and it is worth continuing to read because “every day you learn something new”. Let’s go:
- Although it seems a lie only 22.8% of golfers are women. Something terrible!
- Following the same path, the word golf does not mean “Gentleman Only, Ladies Forbidden”. This is an internet myth. Historians believe that the word “golf” comes from the Dutch word “kolf” or “kolve,” meaning “club.” The Dutch passed this on to the Scottish, whose own dialect changed it to “golve,” “gowl,” or “gouf.”
- The Scottish government banned golf from 1457 to 1502 to ensure citizens wouldn’t waste time when preparing for an English invasion. They believed golf interfered with military training..
- The same people who created the sport of golf in Scotland were also the ones who banned it. But no one knows for sure who invented golf. Different ancient civilizations heavily debate the sport’s ancient roots, although modern golf traces back to 15th-century Scotland.
- A really curious fact that every golfer should take into account is that agolf ball will travel further on hot days, because the air is less dense, so it takes less velocity to travel.
- The French word “Cadet” (cad-DAY) means “youngest child” and is where the word “Caddy” comes from.
- Until 1848, people used golf balls made from leather and chicken or goose feathers which cost $10-20 per ball. Tightly-packed feathers made balls that flew the farthest.
- The driver swing speed of an average lady golfer is 62mph; 96mph for an average LPGA professional; 84mph for an average male golfer; 108mph for an average PGA Tour player; 130mph for Tiger Woods; 148-152mph for a national long drive champion.
- Only two sports have ever been played while on the moon. One is golf and the other is the javelin throw.
- Over 125 thousand golf balls are hit into the water at the 17th hole of Sawgrass’s Stadium Course. One of the most iconic courses in the golf world is the Sawgrass Stadium Course. Most especially the 17th hole.
- Before golf tees, players would shape mounds of sand and place the golf ball on top. Tees were finally popularized in the 1920s.
- The Tactu Golf Club in Peru stands as the highest golf course in the world. Found in the mountains of Morococha, Peru, the Tactu Golf Club’s lowest point towers 14,335 ft over sea level. This golf course has ranked as the highest golf course in the world since the year 1993.
- After, Golf Balls Were (Maybe) Wooden. Many people believe it’s because wooden balls were standard for other games, especially stick-and-ball games.
